Smaltalkkia englanniksi!

Ulkomailla, tai jopa suomessakin, voi tulla tilanne, joka tarvitsee kepeää keskustelua vieraalla kielellä. Hymy ei aina riitä, joskus on pakko sanoa jotain.

Esimerkin antaa pampula:
It has been keeping weathers?

Turkulaisena aloitan toki small talkin ja suuremmankin kiellon kautta.

"Ei oo pal porukkaa tääl viäl."

Hitto. Small talk on englanniksi kuitenkin niiiin paljon helpompaa kuin suomeksi.
Esimerkkejä on tässä vähän vaikea lähteä kylmiltään antamaan, mutta englannin
kieli on tehty ylenpalttiseen tyhyjänpuhumiseen.

Tästä huolimatta:
Jos kysytään 'How are you?' Vastaus on aina 'Fine' tai 'OK' tai 'Good'. Vastausta
EI ilmaista yhtään suuremmalla sanamäärällä kuin YKSI.

well-known firm and my boyfriend just arrived from Belgium.'
Mää oon huono keksimään esimerkkejä.

Eikä siis saa sanoa mitn negatiivista, koska kysyjää ei tosiaankaan
kiinnosta miten toisella menee.

Ehkä lempi-ilmaisuni on sopivan puolihuolimattomasti kysytty jätkämäinen "U allrite, mate?".
Itse en sitä käytä, saattaisi nimittäin kuulostaa lähinnä naurettavalta (varsinkin, kun olen tyttö).

Eikö tähän pitäisi oikeasti vastata samalla tai vastaavalla kysymyksellä? Kyseessähän ei ole niinkään tiedustelu toisen voinnista, vaan kohteliaisuus, jonka myös toisen pitäisi toistaa takaisin.

Vastaava tapaus on myös "How do you do?" -kohteliaisuus, johon pitäisi vastata simppelisti "How do you do?".

Very good indeed, except that you really shouldn't end a sentence with a preposition (although sometimes it's just impossible or at least extremely annoying to try and avoid doing so). This sentence could be easily revised, however: 'I, too, am counting on Ms (I actually prefer Mrs, thank you) Lumikki to come and save us from the pretty deep swamp of mistakes into which we are about to sink.'

Otherwise, nothing to comment. Well done, Saku!

Continuing with Shay:

No hyphen before the word 'thing'. The Finnish grammar rule doesn't apply in English, and there are only rare exceptions in which hyphens are used. Otherwise a very fine sentence indeed, as was the entire post for that matter.

I'd prefer the word order 'Actually, I read...' in the beginning but that's mainly just me (I'm obsessed with starting sentences with a word and a comma). Secondly, you should say 'for the first time' (an exception to the rule that you use the indefinite article when talking about something for the first time). English with a capital E, always! Finally, (here I go again with the commas, see?) 'one's writing skills', not 'ones'.
